There is a complete set of aviation related companies in Lithuania having possibility to develop, manufacture and repair light and medium size aircrafts.
History of manufacturing Lithuanian light airplanes started after WWI, when independece of the Republic of Lithuania was reestablished.

Specialized in manufacture of light and sport airplanes, Lithuania was the only place in former SU where modern composite gliders were developed and manufactured.

Aerodynamic research works started at Sportine Aviacija factory 30 years ago are being continued at the A. Gustaitis Aviation Institute :
Low speed airfoils research and development for sport and light airplanes.
Nonlinear aerodynamic of a finite span wings.
Computer based airflow modelling.
Digital 3D design methods of complex aircraft surface models using modern CAD-CAE software:
Development of digital 3D models of airplane structure using spline (NURBS) curves and surfaces
Mediun and high level CAD-CAE software application for development of complex airplane surface models
Analysis and selection of different methods for 3D shape modelling
Multipurpose use of rotary encoding
UAV’s (Unmanned Air Vehicles) are one of the most perspective types of light airplane structures to develop, manufacture and use (for civil or/and defence purposes) in Lithuania.

Some of the new experimental airplanes designed at Antanas Gustaitis’ Aviation Institute :
We have a possibility to use modern CAD-CAE computer software (Mechanical Desktop, CATIA, ANSYS etc.) and powerful Pentium 4 and RS6000 computers.
Prienai Sportine Aviacija company has designed one of the most advanced lightweight airplanes – LAK-17. It is 15-18m FAI class glider of carbonfibre structure and modern laminar wing section developed in Lithuania.
Its modification LAK-19 (standard FAI class glider) waspresented in 2001.
Helisota Ltd from Kaunas is testing its light JAR-VLA class trainer LAK-X. It is a modern composite two place airplane with outstanding flight characteristics and low fuel consumption. There are two main modifications of the airplane with choice of two engines (95 or 125 hp).
