It's popular in the Arabian Peninsula, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, and neighbouring Arab countries, as well as various East and West African countries.

In Arab states of the Persian Gulf and some parts of Egypt's south, the term refers exclusively to this garment. The proper length of the thawb has been a source of contention.
