Theprimary care physician serves an essential role but can specialize in healthcare for adults, children, pregnant women, patients in nursing homes, and people with chronic health conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes. A primary care physician’s scope of medical care depends on their specialty and the location where they practice.

Primary care physicians or PCPs have the authority to examine, diagnose and treat a variety of medical conditions and illnesses, order lab tests and imaging tests to assist in their diagnosis, prescribe medications, and provide referrals for specialized care and treatments when necessary. Additionally, primary care physicians provide preventive care services such as physicals, wellness exams, and vaccinations.
