Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common problem affecting women of reproductive age. It is a hormonal disorder that causes irregular periods, increases levels of Androgen, or develops cysts on the outer edge of the ovary. If you have any of these symptoms, doctors will conduct a PCOD profile test to diagnose them, which includes comprehensive tests of LH, FSH, and serum prolactin. The other test that can help diagnose PCOD is the anti-mullerian hormone test, which is cost-efficient.

What is Anti-Mullerain Hormone? Women's ovaries secrete AMH, a protein hormone, as they prepare to release the egg during the menstrual cycle. AMH levels show the number of follicles found in the ovary, called antral follicles, which is an indicator of a woman's ovarian reserve. If the antral follicles are higher, this means the AMH levels are high, which suggests a greater number of eggs in the ovary.
AMH and PCOS A woman with PCOS has high levels of antral follicles, which are small ovarian follicles in the early stages of development. Elevated AMH levels, a biomarker for PCOS, are associated with a high follicle count. If the AMH levels are too high, they stop an egg from being released. Women can measure their AMH levels with a blood test on any day of their menstrual cycle.
How AMH Helps in Diagnosing PCOS • As very high levels of AMH in women indicate that they have PCOS, the blood test alone is not enough to diagnose the condition. They can suggest that a woman has PCOS and provide supporting evidence that meets at least two of the characteristics of PCOS: • Missed or irregular periods • Increased levels of androgens • The ultrasound shows cysts on the ovaries
Conclusion If the AMH level is high, an AMH test can be useful in diagnosing PCOS. However, if a woman doesn't exhibit the typical symptoms of PCOS, a diagnosis can be missed. An anti-mullerain test can indicate the possibility of PCOS, and a PCOD profile test can further confirm the diagnosis.
