  2. Elder abuse is recognized as a continually increasing and serious problem in our society. Unfortunately, due to the hidden signs, under-reporting and the absence of a nationwide uniform reporting system, it is difficult to determine the full scope of elder abuse. One way we can shed light on the ever occurring issue of elder abuse and to shield our elderly loved ones from it is to understand the different types of elder abuse and keep a close eye for any hidden signs and symptoms.

  3. Types of Elder Abuse The National Center on Elder Abuse distinguishes between the different types of elder abuse. These include: PHYSICAL ABUSE. Use of physical force that may result in bodily injury, physical pain, or impairment. SEXUAL ABUSE. Non-consensual sexual contact of any kind with an elderly person. EMOTIONAL ABUSE. Infliction of anguish, pain, or distress through verbal or non-verbal acts.

  4. FINANCIAL/MATERIAL EXPLOITATION. Illegal or improper use of an elder’s funds, property, or assets. NEGLECT. Refusal, or failure, to fulfill any part of a person’s obligations or duties to an elderly person. ABANDONMENT. Desertion of an elderly person by an individual who has physical custody of the elder or by a person who has assumed responsibility for providing care to the elder.

  6. It is important to note that while any older person can suffer from elder abuse, some run a greater risk of abuse or neglect than others. Some common signs of elder abuse include: Injuries such as bruises, cuts, or broken bones Malnourishment or weight loss Poor hygiene Symptoms of anxiety, depression, or confusion Unexplained transactions or loss of money Withdrawal from family members or friends
