Let’s familiarize ourselves with the basic terms used in this table. 

  2. 1. Groups- The term groups refers to the columns, and a total of 18 groups are in this table. The chemical elements in the groups are arranged based on similar valence electrons.   2. Periods- The seven different horizontal rows are periods in this table.  3. Atomic number- The total number of protons in the nucleus identifies an element’s atomic number. It is denoted by Z. 4. Atomic mass- The total mass of an atomic particle is known as atomic mass. It is the mass’s sum of protons and neutrons of an atom.  The modern periodic table in the figure comprises seven rows and 18 columns.  Groups are categorized from 1 to 18, and the seven horizontal rows are periods in the long periodic table.  The blocks in the modern periodic table are categorized into S, P, D, and F, framed on the spectroscopic lines of the atomic orbital.  The modern table elements, whose last electrons enter into the outermost S orbital, are called S block elements. The elements of the modern table whose last electron enters into any of the three P orbitals are called P block elements. D & F block elements are known as transition & inner transition elements. D & F block elements are lanthenides and actenides.  Benefits of classification of elements in the modern periodic table  1.
