Fun things about Desktop Publishing • 10 fastest growing occupations 2000-2010* • In projections by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2000-2010, eight of the ten fastest growing occupations are in the computer and technology fields. • Computer software engineers, applications • Computer support specialists • Computer software engineers, systems software • Network and computer systems administrators • Network systems and data communications analysts • Desktop publishers • Desktop publishers are there at number 6 with a projected growth rate of 67% and 25,000 new jobs for Desktop Publishing specialists, making desktop publishing an attractive career field. • Database administrators • Personal and home care aides • Computer systems analysts • Medical assistants
Why is your Page Format Important? • Each type of document has a different design. • Postcard vs. Resume • Calendar vs. Flyer • Using templates helps with these different designs, but some you can make from scratch.
Set up Pages • File>Page Setup • Page Size • Margins • Gutter - name for the inside page edge that will be near binding or a page fold • Binding – How pages of a book or booklet are secured together. • Page Orientation • File>Print Setup

Use Master Pages • Stores objects that are repeated in every page of the publication. • Example: Page Numbers, Watermarks, Logos • Changes affect every page in your publication • Other Microsoft Office programs use this as well, and PowerPoint is a great example of this. • View>Master Page
Insert Page Numbers • Usually placed in the Header or the Footer • The Header displays repeated information and the top edge of a page • A Footer displays repeated information and the bottom edge of a page • “Show page number on first page” option • Insert>Page Numbers

Apply a Color Scheme • Format>Color Schemes • A set of coordinating colors that you can use in a publication • Format>Font Schemes • A set of coordinating font that you can use in a publication • Both will appear in the Task Pane • Pre-Designed to look good together • You can choose to make your own
Use Styles • Styles are a collection of formatting settings that you can apply to text and/or objects all at once. • Format>Styles • Styles are VERY important • Word is considered “Style-Driven”
