  1. What To Expect Of A Good Veterinary Service When we visit the doctor, we have certain expectations about how we want to be treated when we arrive, we expect a good, proper diagnosis when we feel unwell, we expect treatment, and good follow-up. You would also expect warm, friendly service and attentive staff – a practice known for their good reputation and standing in the community. This also applies when you visit the vet, whether you find yourself in Greeley, Colorado, Boulder or Denver – or further out. Or, when we go for a routine check-up visit, we expect good feedback. It is – or should be – not much different when we take our pet to the veterinarian. During a first visit, especially, it is important to form a bond or relationship, especially between your pet and the vet, whether this is a grown pet, or a young animal that you take in for its first visit as a puppy or kitten. If this meeting goes well, you will most likely stay with this animal clinic or service for the rest of your pet’s life. At this first meeting, the following issues – and more if the vet feels the need – should be addressed: the weight of the pet must be recorded – also to compare during future visits – and kept; lungs and the heart should be listened to; the pet’s ears, nose and eyes must be examined to ensure there are no pressing issues; temperature – also rectal – should be noted; skin, coat and mouth should be looked at; testing for worms; abdomen looked at; blood pressure taken; vaccinations administered, and the next vaccination and visit scheduled. If the visit starts off like this, it may well form the basis of a good future relationship with the veterinarian, especially if it is determined that the pet is relaxed and feels comfortable. This is the first visit. Of course pets should visit the vet throughout their lives, just like their owners see the GP and/or specialists. In addition to the first introduction of your pet to the vet (which you will stay with, hopefully) there are definite reasonable expectations one would have of the veterinary service that will be your pets’ health care personnel. In the fist place, be sure the premises/rooms/clinic is clean and presentable, modern (even in an old building) and offers an atmosphere that does not encourage fear in the pet, but rather a space where they can feel relaxed, with or without you. The staff are very important. You want to deal with veterinarians that offer great knowledge and experience in their field, and even better if they have worked in the region for a long time, as that may well prove that they are accepted for their good work and reputation by the pet owners in their community. This is also true for assistants and nurses, but especially so for the vets who are the professionals that diagnose, advise and treat. Vets that give good advice to pet owners about how and what to feed their dogs and cats, and advice about their exercise regimen, are often preferred over a morose person. Important too is to know what services are provided in addition to scheduled, routine visits. You may want to know if the vet performs surgeries such as spaying and neutering, what – if any – orthopedic surgeries he/she is familiar with and performs, you want to know that indeed you have brought your pet to the best animal health care facility in your town, city or region.

  2. To many pet owners it is also important to know if their vet offers boarding facilities for those times that one may have to go on a trip, for example, or if they offer any additional services not directly aimed at the pet’s health when a vet’s visit is required, but to help make sure the pet is generally happy and in good condition. This is what the pet owner should be looking for in their veterinary service or animal clinic.
