The Importance of Self-Esteem No matter how many times we’ve said it, there is no more important factor in personal and professional success than self-esteem. It’s not self- confidence or even hard work. Self-esteem—the absolute belief that you have something to offer the world—is what separates those who achieve from those who don’t.
)Focus on the positive things about yourself One of the quickest ways to feel better about yourself is to focus on your positive attributes and strengths. If you have a hard time seeing how your flaws are balanced out by your accomplishments, ask trusted friends and family what they think of you. You might be surprised by how accurate their descriptions are. Although it might take some effort at first, remembering that others notice your good qualities can help you feel more self- confident in all aspects of life.
)Set realistic goals If you’re struggling with self-esteem, it may help to set realistic goals. Start by identifying your strengths and setting short-term goals that are based on these abilities. For example, if you’re not good at public speaking but have a knack for research, a short-term goal could be completing an in-depth report on a particular topic. Set aside time each day—or week—to work toward achieving your goals.
)Find something new to appreciate each day Find something new in your daily life that you can appreciate. It may be as simple as appreciating your body’s ability to move around and perform every day tasks or being grateful that you live in a place where there is food on your table every night. Finding new things in daily life to appreciate allows us to build self-esteem by reminding ourselves of all of our blessings.
)Listen and pay attention to your inner voice Self-esteem is your perception of yourself. In order to build up your self-esteem, you need to listen to your inner voice and make decisions that help you feel good about yourself. But what if you don’t know what your inner voice wants? Self-esteem can be a lot like love: You should love your friends, family and spouse/partner, but what does that mean in terms of acts? Does it mean taking care of them when they’re sick?
)Take care of your health Good health is a necessity for good self-esteem. so taking care of your body is a must if you want to see your self esteem rise. Whether it means eating better, going to bed on time every night, or taking up some form of physical activity, there are many things you can do daily that will make you feel great about yourself.
)Take care of your physical appearance The first step to building self-esteem is by taking care of your physical appearance. Clothes, hair and personal hygiene can have a huge impact on how you perceive yourself and others perceive you. As simple as it may sound, take care of yourself before dealing with anything else because that’s who you are. If you feel good about yourself, then everything will come more easily to you.
