2. A good man, called Rama, was married to a beautiful princess, called Sita. They lived in a city called Ayodhya, which is in India.
3. One day, their father the King told them they must leave Ayodhya. They were banished, or kicked out of the city. They had to live in the forest. Rama’s brother, Lakshmana, went with them. The reason they were banished from Ayodhya was because the king had remarried. His new wife, their stepmother, wanted her own son to be King.
4. They lived in the forest for fourteen years. They were happy. However, Ravana, a Demon King with ten heads, heard of Sita’s beauty and goodness and decided he wanted her. He planned to kidnap her. So, he used magic. He conjured up a golden fawn. Sita asked Rama to capture it
5. Then the demon king disguised himself as an old man and tricked Sita. He kidnapped her and flew away on his chariot back to his island called Lanka.
6. Rama and Lakshmana searched many months for Sita. Finally, they asked Hanuman, the king of a monkey army, for help. Hanuman had special powers. He could fly.
7. Hanuman found Sita imprisoned on the island of Lanka. So, to rescue her, Hanuman, Rama and Lakshman prepared themselves for battle.
8. This was one of the greatest battles ever seen. The fighting lasted for ten whole days.
9. It looked as though Ravana, the Demon King with ten heads, was going to win, until Rama borrowed a special bow and arrow from the gods. Rama shot Ravana and the battle was won.
10. Rama rescued Sita and they decided to go home. As it got dark, the people of the kingdom put out little oil lamps (divas) in their windows to show the way home.
11. Everyone was happy and Rama and Sita ruled well. Now every year people remember this story at Divali by lighting diva lights inside their homes and fireworks outside.
