  1. An Exposition Romans 1:7-17 The Epistle to the Romans

  2. Review vs. 1:1-6 Romans 1:1-6—REVIEW – Jesus, Messiah, fulfillment of Israel’s hope and the world’s. • First of all Paul was a Pharisee • The Pharisees survived the destruction of the temple because of their progressive views and ability to adopt Torah to contemporary life. Post-exilic Jews had lost Temple, King, and Land major identity crisis. • 3 Pilgrim Feasts, Pesach (Passover), Shavuot (Pentecost), Sukkot (Tabernacles).

  3. Paul’s love for the Romans and intent to preach there • Paul wrote Romans from Corinth in AD 57. (One of the armpits of Greece) • AD 58-60 Paul Imprisoned in Caesarea. • Paul in dealing with Festus, Acts 25:11 appeals to Caesar. • Agrippa said to Festus Acts 26:32 that Paul might have been set at liberty had he not appealed to Caesar. • AD 60 voyage to Rome and shipwreck. Bitten by snake at Malta, Acts 28. • AD 61 he arrives and is imprisoned in Rome under Nero’s reign. He is under house arrest in his own hired house.Acts 28:16.

  4. A Short Time Line • Acts 20:22—AD 58 last Jerusalem visit (from Meletus sent for the Elders at Ephesus to inform them that he would see their faces no more). • *Acts 20:25-37—Divine revelation of the mission ahead.

  5. 1st Roman Imprisonment • Acts 28:28-31 (NIV)—Paul at Rome. "Therefore I want you to know that God's salvation has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen!" [29] [30] For two whole years Paul stayed there in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to see him. [31] Boldly and without hindrance he preached the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ. • —AD 63 acquitted and released by Nero. 64 is the great fire of Rome set by Nero and blamed on the Christians which inflames the city against Christians.

  6. Romans 1:7-15 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. [8] First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. [9] God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you [10] in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God's will the way may be opened for me to come to you.

  7. I Am A Debtor Romans 1:11-15 (NIV) I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong-- [12] that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith. [13] I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles. [14] I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. [15] That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are at Rome.

  8. What does “to save” mean in Paul’s Epistles? Negatively: • Rescue from sin and its effects (Rom. 6:4) • Deliver men from the guilt and shame of sin (Eph. 1:7) • The pollution of sin (Rom. 7:21-25) • Alienation from God (Eph. 2:12) • God’s wrath (Eph 2:3) • Eternal Punishment (Eph 2:5,6)

  9. Positively: • To Make righteous (Rom. 3:21-26) • To set free (Gal. 5:1) • To bring into fellowship (Eph. 2:13) • Give eternal life (Eph. 2:1) • Restore the Imago Dei (Col. 3:10)
