In the exposition of “Ali Baba” one of the stories in Arabian Nights, we are introduced to the setting, characters, and conflict. The setting is Damascus, Syria during a time of much crime and violence. The characters we meet are Ali Baba, his brother Kasim, the evil Black Coda, and Ali’s camel Saffra. The conflict we first see is Black Coda and his men robbing and killing. Ali Baba/Saffra gather wood, find Black Coda’s stash, take riches In the rising action we find poor Ali Baba and his camel gathering wood in the mountains when they stumble upon Black Coda and his gang entering their hideout by using the “open sesame” password. When the gang leaves Ali enters and takes a few riches home to his brother Kasim. Then: Later, when Kasim gets greedy and goes to the cave, he is met by Black Coda and is killed. The huge funeral that Ali throws for Kasim tips off the gang to Ali’s whereabouts. Black Coda sends his entire gang to kill Ali. That night, the forty thieves, hiding in oil jars, wait outside Ali’s home for Black Coda’s signal. Morgianna, Ali’s servant girl, discovers the plot to kill Ali.
