  • Focus on: Essential business English models: refer to the sample presentation (Listening Extract 15 on 280).

A sample presentation for Communicative Activity 6 in Module 3, Book I:

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Zhang Dawei. I’m the CEO of Joy Luck Computer Sales Company.

The aim of this presentation is to tell you about our company’s financial performance and our plans for the next year. First, I’ll tell you about the company’s sales in the last three quarters, and then I’ll look at turnover and profit over the last three quarters, and finally I’ll give you an outline of what we are planning for the next year.

I’d like to draw your attention to this graph. It shows sales for the last three quarters. As you can see, sales dropped considerably in the second quarter because of the fierce competition. But sales have increased satisfactorily in the third quarter. On the whole, we have been doing well in our sales.

efficiency and effectiveness 3
Efficiency and effectiveness 3

Now let’s turn to turnover and profit over the last three quarters. The chart shows that we suffered profit loss in the second quarter, but our turnover and profit gained a good increase in the third quarter. We are generally happy with our financial performance.

Let me now move on to our plans for the future. We are going to spend more money on our promotion programs to introduce new models to the market. We are going to appoint a new marketing manager, who we hope will bring a more dynamic approach to marketing and will help to bring in more customers. As a result of these measures, we think that a 15% increase in sales of our computers next year is realistic.

To conclude, we expect our sales, turnover and profit all to continue to increase. After we make some improvements to our market performance and customer service, we hope to reach a 15% rise next year. Thank you very much for your attention!

humanistic approach main buddhism doctrines 1
Humanistic Approach: Main Buddhism Doctrines 1
  • Four Noble Truths (四谛):
    • The Noble Truth of Pain (Suffering): birth is pain, old age is pain, sickness is pain, death is pain. Union with the unpleasant is pain, separation from the pleasant is pain, not obtaining from what one wishes is pain.
    • The Noble Truth of the Cause of Pain: the craving for lust, for existence, for nonexistence.
    • The Noble Truth of the Cessation of Pain: the complete cessation of that craving---its forsaking, relinquishment放弃, release and detachment from it.
    • The Noble Truth of the Path that Leads to the Cessation of Pain: this is the Noble Eightfold Path, namely, right view, thought, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness and concentration.

BeiwaiOnline Tutor Development Programme 2005

humanistic approach main buddhism doctrines 2
Humanistic Approach: Main Buddhism Doctrines 2
  • The Full Explanation of the Eightfold Path(八正道) is given as follows:
    • Right view is understanding the Four Truths.
    • Right thought is free from lust, ill will, cruelty and untruthfulness.
    • Right speech is abstaining from lying, talebearing, harsh language and vain talk.
    • Right action is abstaining from killing, stealing and sexual misconduct.
    • Right livelihood is earning a living in a way not harmful to any living thing.
    • Right effort is to avoid evil thoughts and overcome them, to arouse good thoughts and maintain them.
    • Right mindfulness is to pay vigilant attention to every state of the body, feeling and mind.
    • Right concentration is concentration on a single object so as to induce certain special states of consciousness in deep meditation.

humanistic approach the essence of education 1
Humanistic Approach: the essence of education 1

BeiwaiOnline Tutor Development Programme 2005

humanistic approach the essence of education 2
Humanistic Approach: the essence of education 2
