What is Assistive Technology? Assistive Technology is any device or service that helps a student with a disability to meet his or her Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and to participate in the general education setting to the greatest possible extent.
IEP teams consider whether AT devices and services are needed to accomplish the individualized goals and objectives for students with disabilities. Unfortunately, there is no federally designated process for them to follow. The Law In Regards to Assistive Technology
LEARNING DISABILITY • (DAISY) Digital Accessible Information SYstem • A hand-held device that students use to access digital files in order to: • Access text (by seeing or hearing it) • Manipulate text (highlight or enlarge font) • Navigate text (jump from page to page, bookmark a page).
HEARING IMPAIRED Headphonesand text-to-speech software to listen to class materials without disturbing the other students.
VISION IMPAIRED Desktop Vision Magnifier is used to scan book to project enlarged print to enable students who have vision impairment to better see text.
PHYSICALLY DISABLE Walker Students with certain disabilities may require a walker to assist them with moving around in the classroom. The type of Assistive Technology needed for students that are physically disable will be based on their disability.
