  1. Integers

  2. What are integers? A family having whole numbers with negative natural numbers ,this group of numbers known as integers. -----,-4,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4,-------- Positive integers = 1,2,3,4 Negative integers = -1,-2,-3,-4 Zero is neither positive nor negative integer.

  3. REAL LIFE EXAMPLES OF INTEGERS • Banking – Rs 100 (debt) , Rs 45 etc. • Elevation – 20m , -30m ( below sea level ) etc. • Temperature - - 5 ,+ 100etc .

  4. Number line • A horizontal line representing numbers in order . • Left side – Negative integers • Center – Zero • Right side – Positive integers

  5. Comparing integers • The farther right on the number line , the greater the value . • The farther left on the number line , the smallest the value . • -5 < 1 • -3 < 2 • 0 > 6

  6. Adding and subtracting integers • Same signs : Add and keep the sign • Different signs: Subtract and use the sign of larger number. • Examples – • (-2) + (-3) = -5 • 5 + (-3) = 2 • (-4) – 2 = -6

  7. Multiplying and dividing integers • Same signs : Positive results • Different signs : Negative results • Examples: • (-3) * (-2) = 6 • 6 * (-4) = -24 • -6 / 2 = -3 • -10/-5 = 2
