Web Browsers
  • A Web browser is a software application that runs on the PC to make it work as a Web client
  • Computers that contain files that are available through Internet connections are called Web servers
  • Web pages are comprised of HTML (HyperText Markup Language) instructions, text, images, sound, etc.

uniform resource locator url
Uniform Resource Locator - URL
  • Each web page has a unique address called a URL
  • URL’s can be comprised of:

Protocol://Host/Path/File.name

Example:

http://web.fccj.org/~rjanson/cgs1100/syllabus.doc

host identification
Host Identification
  • Host can be identified by an IP address or Domain name
    • IP address: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

(ex. 207.203.47.7)

    • Domain name: ….subsubdomain.subdomain.tld

(ex. WWW.FCCJ.EDU)

uniform resource locator url12
Uniform Resource Locator - URL
  • Path is the directory/subdirectories where the web page is located on the host
  • Web page stored in a file with an extension (aka suffix) of HTML or HTM
  • File names consist of prefix.suffix (suffix also called extension)
  • MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions)
entering a url in the address bar
Entering a URL in the Address Bar
  • Type the URL of the location that you want to go to in the Address bar
  • Don’t have to enter the protocol anymore – why?
  • Try: 207.203.47.7
  • Try: fccj.edu
entering a url in the address bar14
Entering a URL in the Address Bar
  • Why doesn’t WWW.FCCJ.EDU need a WWW, path, and file name?
  • If no file name is specified the system looks for a file called index.htm (or html)
    • Try: web.fccj.org/~rjanson
  • If no index.htm file, on my host, a list of files is displayed
    • Try: web.fccj.org/~rjanson/cgs1100/
god bless the browser

  • Browser uses the URL address to create a HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) request and sends the communication over the network

If first time supply SSN and month/day of birthday (01/88)

They will assign a user id (first four letters of last name followed by first and middle initials)

John Quincy Adams= ADAMJQ

(Or JQADAM – changes often)

slide37

Will take you to the Main Menu

Click on

check your unread email

or

My FCCJ Email links

slide38

It will look something like this.

This verifies that you know your user id and password

You now need to verify that your web site is active

slide39

Web Space at FCCJ

More help on FTP

The general format for the location of your web space is:

students.fccj.edu/~xxxxx

Where xxxxx is your user id

verifying your website
Verifying Your Website

To verify that your Unix account (i.e. your website) is active:

  • Start the browser (I.e. Internet Explorer)
  • Enter the URL for your site:

students.fccj.edu/~xxxxx/

(where xxxxx is your user id)

slide41

When you do not specify a file name in the URL (as above) your server searches for a file called index.htm. This default home page (index.htm) was created by FCCJ and placed on your web site.

If the default page does not appear….

slide42

…and you get this “page can not be found” page.

  • One of the following is the cause:
  • You typed the URL incorrectly.
  • Make sure you used the correct case, forward slashes not back slashes, periods are in the right places, etc.
  • 2. Your account may be inactive.
  • Email the FCCJ helpdesk (helpdesk@fccj.edu) or call them (632-3151) & ask them to activate your Unix account. They will ask you for your user id and password. It will take about 30 minutes for the account to be reset.
file transfer protocol ftp
File Transfer Protocol - FTP
  • A method to move files from one internet location to another
  • Need a FTP client application and access to a FTP server computer
  • FTP client app provides a GUI to:
    • “Logon on” to the server site
    • Find files on server and client
    • Transfer files
  • Example: WS_FTP
downloading ftp client s w
Downloading FTP Client S/W
  • Let’s download a FTP client program called WS_FTP LE
  • First we have to find it:
  • OR
  • http://web.fccj.org/~rjanson/cgs1100/
slide53

Change location to your thumb drive

Other windows will pop up asking for locations, just keep clicking OK

slide54

Voila!

She is done!

slide55

These are the files in the directory you saved it to

To run, you can double click the icon…

slide57

Once you know you have your Internet space, start FTP

Identify the web site (host, user id, pw) and give it a profile name

students.fccj.edu

Your userid

and password

You store all this info in a profile name (e.g. mywebpage) so you don’t have to re-enter it every time.

slide58

Find and select (click on) the files you want to upload in the left pane and double click the target directory (public_html) on the server (in the right hand pane) to “go into” that directory/folder

I want to load to a directory inside of public_html called CGS2555 but CGS2555 doesn’t exist

slide59

WS_FTP allows you to create directories/folders

Click MkDir (Make Directory)

Specify the name of the new directory

Click the OK button

slide60

Drill down into the CGS2555 directory by double clicking

Select the files to be transferred (in the left pane)

slide62

The files are transferred and now available at:

http://web.fccj.org/~rjanson/CGS2555/week7.ftp.htm

You MUST load your files into public_html because public_html is the only folder on your website that is available on the Web

slide63

FTP GOTCHA: if you do not use it for a minute, FTP "times out"

When you try to transfer you will get the error msgs below

To reconnect: click the Close button ( the Close button will change to a Connect button). Click the Connect button and then sign on.

accessing the files on your website
Accessing the files on your website
  • You must specify protocol, host, path, name
  • What are your protocol and host?
  • Notice in ftp there is nasty path in the remote site address:

/drv2/home/staff/rjanson/public_html/CGS2555

  • In the URL for your site you do not have to specify the beginning of the path

/drv2/home/staff/rjanson/public_html/

  • You never have to specify public_html!
accessing the files on your website65
Accessing the files on your website
  • Instead of:

/drv2/home/staff/rjanson/public_html/

  • The server created a shortcut for you of ~youruserid:

~rjanson

  • However, you must specify any folders and subfolders (the path) you created and the file name:

http://web.fccj.org/~rjanson/cgs1100/1100syllabus.2010.doc

accessing the files on your website66
Accessing the files on your website
  • If you do not specify all 4 parts of the URL,

http://web.fccj.org/~rjanson/cgs1100/1100syllabus.200.doc

you will not see the page/file!!

accessing the files on your website67
Accessing the files on your website
  • If you only specify these 3 parts

http://host address/~userid/

you will only see the index page

slide68

...and if there is no index.html file in the path you will get Forbidden

(because, unlike my site, your web site will not display a list of files)

help my urls don t work
HELP – MY URLS DON'T WORK!!

Two major reasons:

  • You didn't put the files on your web site or in the correct folder on your website

Solution:

Using FTP, verify the files are in the correct

location on your website

2. You didn't specify the URL correctly

Solution:

Determine which part(s) of the URL is incorrect by:

1. Deleting the right-most portion of the URL (e.g. the file or folder name) and determine if the new URL is valid

2. If it is, then the deleted portion has the mistake

3. If not, repeat steps one and two

help my urls don t workwork
HELP – MY URLS DON'T WORKWORK!!

Another reason:

  • You've filled up all the space on your website

If you've been uploading like crazy (i.e. you've moved all the data files onto your web site or put a lot of pictures on the site) you've filled up your 10 megabytes of space.

To prove: look a the size of the last file you uploaded (it's to the right of the file name). If it's 0 you're out of space.

Solution:

Delete unneeded files. (Gotcha alert: You must

delete all the files in a folder before you can delete

the folder.)
