  1. What is a cone Calorimeter Background history Why did the scientist design a cone calorimeter? Actually, in the 1970s they needed some appropriate instrument to check the flammability of any material. But they were not getting any solution. Meanwhile, the cone introduced a precise instrument which is now present with the name the cone calorimeter. Cone was awarded for this invention too. Cone Calorimeter An instrument which is used to measure the complete behaviour of fire ignition is called a cone calorimeter. Here you get a complete characterization regarding the amount of fire released, ignition duration and total mass loss. Basic Principles Place the required sample in the cone calorimeter. The sample releases heat. This amount of heat is directly proportional to the oxygen which is used in the combustion of the sample. Hence, emitted fire is measured by using this tool. Instrumentation Uses of Cone Calorimeter Here are some common uses of cone calorimeter: ● For determination of extinguishing efficiency of any material. ● To analyse smoke production in the exhaust ducts. ● To detect seasonal differences in selected combustion characteristics of ornamental vegetation. ● Assessment of class of flame retardants. ● Test the burning performance of liquorice.
