  2. The Advance • The three major Axis Powers, Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Imperial Japan were part of an alliance. • On June 22, 1941, the Axis attacked. It is difficult to precisely pinpoint the strength of the opposing sides in this initial phase, as well as several other issues of comparability between the German and USSR's figures. A reasonable estimate is however, that roughly three million German soldiers, went into action on 22 June, and that they were facing slightly fewer Soviet troops in the border Military Districts.

  3. Siege of Leningrad • The Siege of Leningrad was the German siege of Leningrad during World War II and arguably the second most lethal battle in world history. The German plan was coded as Operation North Light. The siege lasted from September 8, 1941, until it was lifted on January 27, 1944. • After the war, The Soviet government reported about 670,000 deaths from 1941 to January 1944, mostly from starvation and exposure. Some independent estimates give a much higher death toll of anywhere from 700,000 to 1.5 million, with most estimates around 1.1 million.

  4. Atlantic Charter • Eight major points • No territorial gains were to be sought by the United States or the United Kingdom. • Territorial adjustments must be in accord with wishes of the peoples concerned. • The peoples had a right to self-determination. • Trade barriers were to be lowered. • There was to be global economic cooperation and advancement of social welfare. • Freedom from want and fear was to be enforced. • There was to be freedom of the seas. • Disarmament of aggressor nations and postwar common disarmament was to be done. • The agreement proved to be one of the first steps towards the formation of the United Nations.

  5. Failure of Barbarossa • The main causes of German failure were the underestimated capabilities of the Soviet Union and the fierce resistance of the Soviet Army. • The grave situation in which the beleaguered German army found itself towards the end of 1941 was due to the increasing strength of the Red Army, compounded by a number of factors which in the short run severely restricted the effectiveness of the German forces.
