How LS7 Cylinder Heads Effect Horsepower Levels The LS7 was the culmination of the Gen IV LS architecture, and as such, it has attracted the attention of racers looking for a solid foundation on which to create extremely powerful engines. The all-aluminum LS7 has a lot of overhead locked up, and 1,000 horsepower is not unheard of with the correct power adders. The LS7 engine from General Motors has the greatest displacement and is a complete beast right out of the box. This 7.0L engine was rated at 505 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The cathedral ports used in earlier LS designs have been replaced by rectangular apertures in the LS7 cylinder heads. The 427 cubic inch Corvette C5.R engine from Chevrolet's factory racing program in the early to mid-2000s served as the basis for the engine's development. As a result, the LS7's heads draw heavily from experience gained on the racetrack. They include huge 12-degree-angled valves, titanium intake, and exhaust valves, and a maximum rpm capacity of around 7,000 rpm.

  2. There are typically two options: switching to a better-flowing aftermarket design or doing a full port and polish on the heads. On a well-built motor, either should be able to push you past 400 cfm (intake) and 250 cfm (exhaust) at a 0.700-inch lift. Replace the factory valve guides if you opt to remain with stock and port because they tend to wear out faster than in other LS designs. The exhaust side doesn't flow nearly as effectively as the intake side, which is a common "weak spot" in an otherwise superb design (220 cfm versus 370 cfm).
