  2. Warm-Up Find the Surface Area or Volume of a right cylinder in the following questions: 1. r = 4, h = 15, S = ___ 2. r = 4, h = 15, V = ___

  3. DEFINITIONS • Cylinder - A cylinder is a solid that consists of a circular region and its translated image on a parallel plane, with a lateral surface connecting the circles. • Lateral Surface - The face or surface of the solid on its sides. That is, any face or surface that is not a base. • Bases - The faces formed by the circular region and its translated image. • Altitude - A segment that has endpoints in the planes containing the bases and is perpendicular to both planes. The height of a cylinder is equal to the length of the altitude. • Axis - The segment joining the centers of the two bases. • Right Cylinder - A cylinder where the axis is perpendicular to the bases. • Oblique Cylinder - A cylinder where the axis is NOT perpendicular to the bases. • Lateral Area - The sum of the area of the lateral surface(s) on a prism.

  4. Note Card: 7.4.1 Surface Area of a Right Cylinder The surface area, S, of a right cylinder with lateral area L, base B, radius r, and height h is: S = L+2B or S = 2πrh+2πr^2 Volume of a Cylinder Note Card: 7.4.2 Volume of A Cylinder The volume, V, of a cylinder with radius r, height h, and base area B is: V = bhor V = π2^2h Surface Area of A Cylinder Note: This formula is the same for right and oblique cylinders

  5. Activity 1 Application: You are given a tootsie roll. The radius, r,is 1 cm. The height, h, is 4 cm. Find the Surface Area and Volume of the tootsie roll. S = ____ V = ____
