A quiet place Directed by john krasinski
Narrative. • directed by john krasinski, starring him and his wife emily blunt • - immediately we are introduced with the time stamp 'day 89'. we as the audience can only assume that this is 89 days after a catastrophic event as we are shown establishing shots of the town in a post apocalyptic state
The establishing shots of the town makes it feel post apocalyptic and empty • The wide shots of the empty super market show the audience how this event of some sort has effected this population, in 89 days the majority of supermarkets have been emptied • the low dolly shot gliding across the floor showing the child running down an empty isle full of food makes the audience question why the food hasn't been taken • the zoom pull from the pill bottles to Emily blunts face signifies a sense of importance towards the pill bottles • Throughout the scene there is no music playing , we only hear the subtle careful diegetic noises of what the characters hear • A very important part to notice in this opening scene is the changes of what the characters can hear, by listening carefully we can identify which of the characters are deaf and which aren’t. • The shot reverse shot between the girl with the braids and the young boy on the floor show this act of sound change playing out, the audio over the shot of the girl is silent whereas the audio over the boy picks up the small noises around him • As a young boy he is tempted by toys so when he reaches for the space ship but suddenly drops it, the tension swiftly rises in the scene. • The lowkey lighting throughout the scene creates an eerie dark setting
