  1. “The Test of Obedience”1 John 1:5-1005/23/2010Dr. Dane Boyles

  2. 1 John 1:5, NIV 5This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

  3. 1 John 1:6, NIV 6If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.

  4. “The Test of Obedience” Introduction Issues in 1 John: • John was living in Ephesus when he wrote 1 John. • Ephesus lay within the intellectual center of Asia Minor.

  5. “The Test of Obedience” • The philosophical trends of the day were devastating the church. • False teachers were distorting the teaching about the humanity of Jesus and the atonement.

  6. “The Test of Obedience” • John writes this letter as a “recall to the fundamentals of the faith.” • John labels those who are departing from the truth as antichrists.

  7. “The Test of Obedience” • Their teachings are demonic (4:1-7). 1Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world (1 John 4:1, NIV)

  8. 1 John 4:3, NIV 3This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world

  9. 1 John 5:13, NIV 13I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

  10. “The Test of Obedience” • Obedience is the root of everything. 3 This is love for God: to obey his commands. (1 John 5:3, NIV) 6And this is love: that we walkin obedience to his commands. (2 John 1:6, NIV)

  11. Matthew 22:36-38 36‘“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ 37Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38This is the first and greatest commandment.’”

  12. “The Test of Obedience” 15“If you love me, you will obey what I command.” (John 14:15) • John gives us two definite tests of obedience.

  13. 1 John 1:7, NIV 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

  14. 1 John 1:8, NIV 8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

  15. 1 John 1:9, NIV 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

  16. “The Test of Obedience” • The First Definite Test of Obedience. • “if we walk in the light, as he is in the light” (1:7). • Once we were controlled by the sinful nature (Eph 2:1-2; Rom 7:5).

  17. Ephesians 2:1, NIV 1As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,

  18. Ephesians 2:2, NIV 2in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

  19. Ephesians 2:3, NIV 3All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts.

  20. Ephesians 2:4-5, NIV 4But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions.

  21. “The Test of Obedience” • Now we are like Jesus in our new nature. • Our adoption occurs at our conversion to Christ, which happens at baptism.

  22. Galatians 3:26-27, NIV 26You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

  23. Ephesians 4:22, NIV 22You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;

  24. Ephesians 4:23-24, NIV 23to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

  25. Galatians 2:20, NIV 20… I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.

  26. “The Test of Obedience” • Two consequences to walking in the light: 1. 7 we have fellowship with one another. (1 John 1:7, NIV)

  27. “The Test of Obedience” • You can’t have communion with God and neglect fellowship with other Christians.

  28. 1 John 1:7, NIV 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another.

  29. “The Test of Obedience” • Love of other Christians is the product of the love of God. • Fellowship with your brothers is the proof of fellowship with God.

  30. “The Test of Obedience” 2. 7… the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (1 John 1:7) • It results in forgiveness, restoration & the reestablishment of love.

  31. “The Test of Obedience” • Christianity is not a “walk alone” religion. • You can’t get the blood without the fellowship.

  32. “The Test of Obedience” • The Second Definite Test of obedience. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteous-ness. (1 John 1:9, NIV)

  33. “The Test of Obedience” • Freedom from sin comes not by denial but by confessing and abandoning it. • Confession links us to the mercy of God! • We must confess our sins!

  34. “The Test of Obedience” • Do you see the relationship between confession and forgiveness? • Forgiveness comes because of confession. • It’s what keeps people from experiencing the fullness of God!

  35. “The Test of Obedience” • Confession has a second component, 9If we confess our sins, God will purify us from all unrighteousness (1:9).

  36. “The Test of Obedience” • We stand before God sinless and perfect. 9He’s faithful and just. (1 John 1:9, NIV)

  37. Acts 13:38, NIV 38 “Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.

  38. 1 John 1:9 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

  39. Acts 2:38, NIV 38Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

  40. 1 John 2:4-5, NIV 4The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him.

  41. “The Test of Obedience”1 John 1:5-1005/23/2010Dr. Dane Boyles

  42. 1 John 1:10, NIV • 10If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
