The University of Tirana was founded on 16 September 1957 under the name of State University of Tirana. The State University of Tirana was composed of 6 faculties in which some previously established institutes were included, such as:
  • Institute of Science (1947)
  • Institute of Medicine (1951)
  • Polytechnic Institute (1951)
  • Institute of Economics (1951)
  • Institute of Law (1954)

University of Tirana started its academic year 2005 – 2006 with the new curricula compiled according to the Bologna Process.University of Tirana gives 55 diferent Bachelor diploma.The duration of Bachelor is generally 3 years.For Law and Economics studies diploma the duration is 3.5 - 4 years.University of Tirana deliver second cycle, “Master” level.The duration of a Master degree is 2 years or 1 year.The 3d cycle- “Doctorate” is given after completing the Master and it lasts from 3 to 5 years.

  • The number of optional modules has increased - up to 20% of all Bachelor curriculum
  • Teaching is integrated with research and development.
  • Internal evaluation group is already established in each faculty and are trained from Agency of Accreditation for Higher Education.

  • Departments cover a field or a scientific orientation for which they have institutional responsibility
  • The institution of the professor functions in the department and the working groups are in the shape of a pyramid, the top of which is the professor and then the Doctorate and Master postgraduates as well as the students.

Research activity is performed through projects funding introduced by government or/and various grants for research scholars.
