  2. Introduction • Doug Emhoff is an attorney. He was born in Brooklyn. He went to school in California and got his law degree there. In 1990, he became a lawyer. He eventually became a partner at the top law firms Venable and DLA Piper. He worked on a number of high-profile cases for wealthy clients. Emhoff is also known for marrying Vice President Kamala Harris. Douglas will be the first Jewish person to marry a vice president of the United States. He is the first Second Gentleman of the United States.

  3. Early Life • Douglas Craig Emhoff was born in New York on October 13, 1964. Barbara and Mike were his mom and dad, and Mike made shoes for women.

  4. Family • The future lawyer and his older sister Jamie and younger brother Andy grew up in New Jersey. Dougla’s family moved to California when he was 17 years old.   5. School • Emhoff went to college at Cal State Northridge and got a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication studies. Douglas went to the USC Gould School of Law and got his J.D. in 1990.

  6. Legal Work • Emhoff began his career as a partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman. In 1990, he moved to Bingham McCutchen. The young lawyer moved to Belin Rawlings & Badal at the end of the decade and became a partner there. His work in the entertainment industry with Hollywood Video and the studios gave him his first big taste of entertainment law.

  7. Start the Law Firm • He started the law firm Whitwell Jacoby Emhoff with two other people in the year 2000. He finally got them to move their business litigation practise to Venable LLP, which was a bigger firm. Emhoff later joined a high-profile lawsuit about who had the right to make the famous Taco Bell chihuahua. He also worked on important cases for the drug company Merck, the arms dealer Dolarian Capital, and the NFL player Willie Gault. After helping to open Venable’s office in San Francisco, he was named managing director of the company’s West Coast operations in 2015.

  8. Children from the First Relationship • Emhoff married the actress Kerstin Mackin in 1992. Cole was their son, and Ella was their daughter. Both were named after famous jazz musicians, John Coltrane and Ella Fitzgerald. Before they split up, they had been married for 16 years.

  9. Marriage • In 2013, Emhoff and Harris met through a client and friend of both of them. Harris was the top lawyer in California at the time. The relationship got better and better, and in March 2014, Emhoff asked her to marry him. They got married at the courthouse in Santa Barbara, California, on August 22, 2014. The ceremony, which was a mix of Hindu and Jewish traditions, was run by Harris’s sister, Maya.

  10. Won the Election • When Harris became Joe Biden’s running mate in August 2020, Emhoff took his campaigning more seriously. His appearances with Jill Biden and his use of social media as @DougHive brought him attention. On November 7, 2020, when it was announced that they had won the election, he was there to record his wife’s happy call to Biden. This was a historic moment because Harris was the first woman, black person, and Asian American to get to her position, and Emhoff was the first Jewish person to marry a vice president of the United States.

  11. Interests • Emhoff has been a speaker for the non-profit Association of Independent Commercial Producers and has done community and charity work in the areas of legal aid, social justice, and child welfare. Douglas also likes to play golf and fantasy football, and when his wife is cooking, he does a good job as a sous-chef.
