  1. WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW ABOUT PAD TREATMENT? When you think about blocked arteries, it is likely that the heart comes to mind. But, while these arteries are important, the heart will only represent one portion of the body where arterial hardening and blockages may happen. In patients with Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), hardening of arteries will occur outside of the heart, mostly in the legs. And just as clogged arteries in the heart raise the risks of suffering a cardiovascular event, so does a PAD. WHAT CAUSES PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE? PAD is the result of atherosclerosis, a condition in which plaque builds inside the arteries. Over time, this plaque hardens and reduces the course of oxygen- rich blood. Untreated complications from PAD can include heart attack, loss of limbs, or strokes due to an injury or infection. While the precise cause of atherosclerosis is not known, certain conditions know how damage the internal layers of the arteries may be the contributors. These can include diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, and high LDL cholesterol levels.
