That's because this topic is often brushed under the table. But recent reports say that about 50% of infertility cases are caused by male infertility, owing to the reproductive anomalies in the male. Infertility doctors revealed that the average sperm count of a normal Indian adult male today is 20 million/ml, whichis three times lower than the average sperm count of a normal Indian adult male three decades ago which stood at around 60 million/ml. When is the sperm count considered low? If it dips below 20 or 15 million sperm per millilitre (ml) of semen. Research also shows that the male infertility factor, which can be a combination of low sperm count and poor sperm motility. is the primary reason why people around 29 to 35 age group face trouble while conceiving. But because of social stigma, a lot of men with fertility problems are never diagnosed and treated. What can be causing a low sperm count? Sperm production is a complex process and involves different organs and systems in the body working together. These include testicles, hypothalamus, pituitary glands, and penis. Problems with any of these organs will significantly impact a male's sperm production. Men with existing health issues like hormonal imbalances, chromosome defects, varicocele, and infection are more likely to have an issue with low sperm count. Today's lifestyle is also seen as a major cause of male infertility. Poor diet, lack of exercise, alcohol consumption, smoking, stress, and other unhealthy activities are some of the culprits of the rising cases of male infertility. What are the symptoms of low sperm count? Some of the signs and symptoms that a male is having low sperm count are: - Difficulty with ejaculation - Low volume of ejaculated fluid - Erectile dysfunction - Low sexual desire Can it be treated? Fortunately, male infertility can be prevented and treated. For starters, men can form healthy habits and get rid of unhealthy ones. They can also try medical procedures such as Intra-uterine Insemination, In Vitro Fertilization, and Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection. It’s important to seek medical help to get scientific guidance on the matter.
