  2. Understanding Raccoon Behaviour • Primarily nocturnal, raccoons are most active at night to avoid human encounters and predators. • They nest in secure, enclosed spaces like attics, chimneys, etc. for the safety of their young and protection from predators. • Highly adaptable, they thrive in diverse environments from forests to urban areas. • Raccoons display remarkable resilience in finding food and shelter in any environment.

  3. Signs of a Raccoon Infestation • Noises in the Attic at Night: Raccoons are nocturnal animals, so you may hear noises such as scratching, scurrying, or vocalizations coming from the attic at night. • Unpleasant Odour: Raccoons have a strong odour, and their urine and feces can produce a foul smell. • Damaged Insulation or Soffits: Raccoons may damage insulation or soffits while trying to gain entry to the attic or to build a nest. • Raccoon Tracks: Raccoon tracks are similar to human footprints, but they are smaller and have five toes. You may find raccoon tracks in the attic, on the roof, or around the exterior of your home. • Visual Sightings of Raccoons: If you see raccoons entering or exiting your home, this is a clear sign of an infestation.

  4. How to Assess the Situation • Listen for Signs of Activity: Movement and Noises at Night • Check for Visual Evidence: Droppings, Tracks, Holes or Damage • Identify Entry and Exit Points: Look for Gaps, Inspect Chimneys, Vents, and Other Potential Openings • Assess the Number of Raccoons: Look for Signs of Multiple Droppings and Tracks • Search for the Presence of Baby Raccoons: Look for Small Droppings and Tracks • Evaluate Potential Risks and Hazards: Structural Damage, Aggressive Behaviour, Electrical Wires or Hazards. • Consider The Time of Year: Breeding Season or Denning Season • Determine the Best Course of Action: Exclusion, Trapping or Professional Removal

  5. Raccoon Exclusion Techniques • Secure Garbage Bins: Use wildlife-proof containers to prevent raccoons from accessing food sources. • Seal Entry Points: Close off openings in your home to deny raccoons access. • Trim Tree Branches: Keep branches away from the roof to deter raccoons from climbing onto your property. • Install Motion-Activated Lights: These can startle raccoons and discourage nocturnal visits.

  6. Humane Raccoon Trapping Techniques • Choose the Right Trap: Live Cage Traps, Hovawart Traps or One Way Exclusion Door • Select the Appropriate Bait: Fruits, Vegetables, Fish, Meat, etc. • Place the Trap Strategically: Near Entry Points, Areas of Frequent Activity or on a Flat Surface • Check the Trap Regularly:At Least Twice Daily, Preferably Early Morning and Evening • Relocate Safely and Humanely: Wear Gloves and Protective Clothing for Safety

  7. Reference Links • Benefits of Preventive Raccoon Control • Tell-Tale Signs You Have a Raccoon in Your Home • Why Should I Hire A Licensed Trapper To Trap Raccoons? • What Should You Do if You Encounter a Raccoon in Toronto? • Keep Raccoons at Bay: Effective Ways to Raccoon-Proof Your Home
