  5. Thanks to Karen for presenting this ppt. With POES, we met some problems between global and local level 1B : http://guy.rochard.free.fr/meteo/fichiers/STG_SWG_12_2002_Brunel.pdf presents global/local differences for POES calibration and navigation http://guy.rochard.free.fr/meteo/fichiers/10282.doc indicates the needed coherence between local & global calibrations. With NPP & NPOESS, we could met similar troubles. The following slide indicates other problems to solve for both global and local preprocessings to optimize the coupling of instruments.

  6. http://guy.rochard.free.fr/meteo/fichiers/crop0002.jpg shows HIRS channel registration. http://guy.rochard.free.fr/meteo/fichiers/crop0006.jpg AVHRR channel registration. http://guy.rochard.free.fr/meteo/fichiers/secondlobes.doc secondary lobe antenna of AMSU. http://guy.rochard.free.fr/meteo/fichiers/crop0003.jpg misalignment between AVHRR and HIRS. http://guy.rochard.free.fr/meteo/fichiers/Misalignment_and_coregistration.doc summarizes a work done to improve partly these problems on POES.

  10. MISALIGMENT HIRS/AVHRR

  11. * http://www.meteorologie.eu.org/ici/ shows the benefit to collocate AVHRR and HIRS. * Why not a collocation of VIRSS, CrIS, ATMS, CMIS ?… http://guy.rochard.free.fr/meteo/fichiers/localglobalHIRS.doc shows that a too large difference between NESDIS (global) and Lannion (local) rejects one of the data source in NWP. * About navigation of the data, collocation + landmarks are the best using automatic software. * About calibration, a compromise must be found between the global preprocessing (using one full orbit) and direct readout.

  12. REPARTITION GEOGRAPHIQUE DES OBSERVATIONS ATOVS HIRS

  13. Safety Net SafetyNet is a system of 15 globally distributed SMD receptors linked to the centrals via commercial fiber, it enables low data latency and high data availability

  14. Direct readout : The hardware exists…so, now, the software has to come.!… NPP & NPOESS also… Thanks !… This ppt is available at : http://guy.rochard.free.fr/meteo/fichiers/locglob.ppt

  15. Conclusions : * Outside USA, it’s not sure to get SAFETY NET data in 20 mn. * It’s necessary for regional use to get the data through direct readout access up to 1B navigated radiances (at least), then : * A local preprocessing package is necessary as AAPP for POES. * Coherence between “local/global” calibration & navigation is needed as collocation between visible, infra-red and microwave… and an operational monitoring of this coherence should exist * Up to level 1B, we must rely on the manufacturers of the radiometers and spacecrafts.. Above 1B, all should should get benefit from a cooperation with users en scientists.
