  2. There is currently a huge shortage of HGV drivers in the United Kingdom, according to the Road Haulage Association, which finds the shortage to be close to a hundred thousand. This makes HGV driving a high-demand job with a limited supply at the moment. The pandemic and Brexit have only made things worse. This is an opportune moment for residents of the UK to get their HGV license and have a successful career as an HGV driver in the UK. Where to Begin? Anyone who wishes to become a professional HGV driver has to complete the process laid out by the Government authorities. To begin with, one must possess a full car license, be above 18 years of age and qualify the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence or the (CPC). There are a total of five tests that are a part of the full driver CPC; however, if you have previously qualified as an HGV driver and want to retrain, you might be exempted from taking all tests. One must ensure to check for exceptions to this rule. For first time qualifiers, You need to apply for an HGV Provisional Licenseor bus license Qualify all 5 tests of Driver CPC Take 35 hours of regular training once in 5 years to retain your qualification The license is to be renewed every 5 years till one turns out to 65 years of age and every year after that. Those taking a National Vocational Training Course are allowed to drive professionally for 12 months before taking Driver CPC and part 4 tests.

  3. Driver CPC is also exempted for those who want to carry passengers or goods for non- commercial purposes, only drive for specific tasks, and do not have driving as the main part of their job. Applying for Provisional HGV License There are several categories of provisional licenses that one can choose from depending on the type of vehicle you want to drive and the weight of the trailer you can tow with it. To apply for an HGV license forms D2 and D4 must be filled from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). Form D4: This is a mandatory medical routine check by a physician. There is no need to panic since there is no expectation of being in perfect health to receive an HGV license. The only expectation is to be of reasonably good health that will not interfere with your work and be a safety issue in the future. The D4 form is to be filled out by the doctor and not the candidate. The GP fills the form based on your medical tests conducted. An optician may need to fill out the specific sections related to eyesight. There is no restriction on where the candidate chooses to get tested and thus has the freedom to choose private or government medical practitioners. The form is submitted to the DVLA as evidence of fulfilling medical requirements. Please note that it is not the doctor who certifies your fitness for the role of an HGV driver. The doctor merely fills out the form, and the DVLA decides your suitability for the role depending on the doctor’s remarks.

  4. Form D2: A lorry driving license depends on the weight of the vehicle and the additional trailer in tow. Depending on the license category one chooses in form D2, one may get additional provisional entitlements to what they apply for. For instance – if one chooses to apply for C or C1+E license, they may get additional entitlements of C1 and C+E. These associated forms are to be filled by the applicant themselves and submitted to the DVLA. Both the forms along with the photocard of the driving license need to be submitted. If one holds a paper driving license, then a passport-style photo needs to be submitted along with original identity documents. Once the forms are submitted, it usually takes about 3 weeks for DVLA to release your driver’s license to the applicant. It may also take longer if additional checks need to be performed. One automatically loses their HGV or bus license if they lose their car driving license. It includes applying for a digital driver tachograph card to store information about their daily work and prepare for international journeys by checking their passport and visa validities and insurance requirements. The candidate will be sent a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) card or DQC, which they must carry with them at all times while driving.
