  2. Driving in inclement weather is never safe, both for commercial and private vehicles. Transportation delays can have a detrimental effect on a variety of enterprises. In today’s digital times, it is very important for goods to reach on time across Europe. Of course, it’s not just adverse weather conditions that drivers of commercial vehicles have to deal with. These are some of the reasons why commercial drivers need to be trained properly on driving an HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle). Now, it is true that unless a trainee drives a real vehicle in the real world, concepts will never be fully grasped. With this in mind, basic concepts are taught conveniently through reputed institutes which provide HGV training in Glasgow. Each instructor at a reputable school has several years of experience driving a large commercial vehicle, which could be an LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) as well. What Is the Difference Between an LGV and an HGV? There is no difference between the two in terms of training. HGV refers to a British truck that weighs more than 7.5 tonnes (unladen). On the other hand, the term “LGV” refers to a European truck of the same weight. Companies use these two terms interchangeably while describing truck driving jobs. Confusion often comes up through the inaccurate use of the word LGV, as some people regard it as a short form for Light Goods Vehicle. They think this is necessary to drive pickup trucks and vans with a gross weight lesser than 3500kg. In reality, regular individuals can drive up to 3500 kg (3.5 tonnes) with the regular automobile driving licence— category ‘B’ licence. Safety on European Roads The European Union is dedicated to road safety, which is why CPC, HGV, and LGV certifications are required of truck drivers. Commercial drivers, not just in the UK, but throughout the world, must be well trained in order to move objects or passengers for several hours on the road. Though progress in HGV training course was rather sluggish in the year 2020 due to COVID-19, it has gathered steam in recent months. Driver CPC is currently required to operate a bus, truck, or coach in the European Union (European Union). Drivers who hold both Category C and Category D licences are required by law to complete CPC training. The abbreviation CPC stands for “Certificate of Professional Competence.” The Government intends to use its introduction to maintain a high quality of driving and to increase road safety across Europe. How Long Is CPC Effective? Once obtained, driver CPC is valid for five years. Drivers must complete 35 hours of training to retain their CPC after the deadline has expired. The course itself takes two months in the normal mode and three months in the part time mode to complete. This time span encompasses the examination period and the completion of case studies. Each future CV (Commercial Vehicle) driver must understand that without the aforementioned initial qualification, no commercial driving licence can be issued.

  5. If training is completed 12 months prior to the course’s deadline, the driver is eligible to get the CPC card.
