Moving Companies Share Some Do's and Don'ts Image 1: Moving Companies in Chicago Provide Basic Guidelines to Packing Stuff Packing and unpacking are tedious processes that every person who experienced moving wishes they will never have to repeat. While there are a number of reputable moving companies willing to accomplish the task for you, for a specific price, it still helps to learn some do's and dont's when it’s already time for you to face that dreaded chore. 2. Do create a moving checklist A moving checklist devised a couple of months before your actual move helps you to organize your thoughts and create a workable timeline for the move. The schedule should indicate the number of days needed to pack the essentials for your new place. Do find time to declutter and sort out your things This seems like an arduous task, but you should take the time to sort out your belongings according to categories. Sorting your belongings can actually help ease that feeling of being overwhelmed by myriad possessions. It’s also the best time to rid yourself of things that you won’t be using in your new place. Put a label on those items you plan on bringing with you, while you can ask your relatives and friends to ‘adopt’ the stuff that you won’t be bringing. The rest of your stuff can either be donated, sold, or put in the trash, depending on its remaining usability. Do make a floor plan for your new place If you’re not sure which furniture to take with you, start measuring the floor area of the new place and create a feasible furniture layout. This will most certainly give you an idea if everything will fit in your new space. Comfortable yet functional are the keywords that you should keep in mind when creating the floor plan. Don’t be too sentimental with your stuff. Always approach it with a practical and honest mind so that you can easily discard or replace the items that won’t fit your new home. Page | 2

  3. Do create a master ‘moving’ file Even with the utmost efficiency in packing, you cannot avoid the fact that everything will be in chaos for the next few days as you begin to unload and unpack your belongings to your new abode. However, a master list of all the belongings you bring can actually save you from potential theft, damage, or loss of property while you are moving. You will also need a master file for all the contacts that are directly related to your impending move (e.g., professional mover’s number, the new landlord’s info, etc.). This way, it will be easier to contact the responsible party if ever you have a question or encounter a problem before, during, or after the move. Do allot a packing budget Obviously, you need money to buy boxes, packing tape, staplers, and other supplemental moving materials. Therefore, aside from your actual moving budget, it’s also best to allot some cash for these supplies.
