  1. Adult Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) Information 1. Prevalence: People of all ages, including children and people with APD, are susceptible. It is unclear how widespread APD is in the general population, though. Researchers evaluated 1,026 older persons as part of a cohort study. The age range of the group was 64 to 93. The study found that it occurs less frequently in older persons than previously believed. It impacted 22.6% of the subjects. 2. Central APD is the most prevalent type of "hidden hearing loss". When normal audiograms are present, HHL refers to the difficulty of hearing spoken words over the background noise. An audiogram can be used to detect hearing loss by charting the frequencies that a person hears.

  2. A 2017 study found that cochlear synaptopathy causes HHL. Cochlear synaptopathy is a communication block between inner hair cells and cochlear nerve fibres. However, a 2018 study contends that HHL originated in central APD. According to researchers Musiek et al., "Central APD results from deficits in perceptual processing of auditory stimuli in the central nervous system." It is distinguished by difficulty identifying speech in background noise despite having normal pure-tone thresholds. 3. APD in stroke survivors: There were 42 stroke victims and 40 control subjects in the study. Everyone participated in a variety of tests in a single session. They were then separated into three groups: peripheral hearing loss, central APD, and a combination of peripheral and central APD.
