  2. Background • 15 different species under 3 main divisions – Chlorophyta, Rhodophyta and Phaeophyta • Brief description of each species, and ways to identify them • Picture accompaniments

  3. Division Chlorophyta

  4. Enteromorpha and Ulva spp. • Enteromorpha – hollow, tubular, some branched, uninucleate cells, single chloroplast, many pyrenoids • Ulva – blade-like, 2 cells-thick, single chloroplast, single pyrenoid

  5. Chaetomorpha and Cladophora spp. • Chaetomorpha – uniseriate, unbranched filaments, multinucleate cells, clumped. • Cladophora – tufts, coarse, grow up 10 6 cm, stiff branches that curve in same direction

  6. Division Phaeophyta

  7. Cutleria and Ralfsia spp. • Cutleria – heteromorphic plants, gametophyte erect, fan-shaped blades, thallus rigid and flat • Ralfsia – crusty and brittle, two-layered thallus, circular outline

  8. Division Rhodophyta

  9. Halymenia and Hypnea spp. • Halymenia – plant erect, gelatinous fronds, either branching or blade-like thallus • Hypnea – cylindrical and compressed, slender branches with curled branchlets

  10. Plocamium and Champia spp. • Plocamium – plant erect, bushy, bright red, branching in zigzag manner • Champia – plant erect, small, clumped, delicate, branches are cylindrical and compressed
