RespectforChildren The most important principle of Montessori educationis respect for children. The Montessori method teaches believe that children should be treated as individuals with unique talents and abilities;itdoesnotadvocate treatingthemlike miniadultsorlittle machines. Infact, theoppositeistrue:treatingchildrenas miniadultscanstunttheirdevelopment. They learnat different rates, andtheyare allmotivatedbydifferent things.Thismeansthatone approach will not work for all children, but rather you need to individualize your approach depending on the child’sinterestsandneeds. • Montessori schools are child-centered in a way that traditional schools may not be able to match teachers create an environment where children feel free to select their own activities basedonwhatintereststhem most withinthecontext ofdaily lessons. • WholeChildEducation– Social, Emotional, Physical,Mental • The conceptofwholechildeducationmeansthatMontessorischoolsdonotfocusonjust one aspect ofa child’s development, suchas theirintellectualorphysicalcapabilities.Rather, they considerallaspectsofdevelopmentwhenteachingorguidingstudents. In additiontolearning howtoreadandwrite,Montessoristudents alsolearn howtointeract withothersinsociety throughsocialskills. In thisway, thefoundationforeachstudent’sfuture successislaidat an early age because theyare preparedforwhateverlife maybringthem laterdowntheroad. • EmpoweredbyChoice • Montessoriclassrooms are communitiesofchildren. TheMontessoriphilosophyisthat children learn best when they are encouraged to make choices, try new things, and take responsibility fortheirownlearning.Theydothisbyengaging in activitiesthatinterest them, choosing a path that intereststhem, andthenbeingresponsible forfollowingthroughwithit. • PreparedMontessoriEnvironment • ThepreparedMontessorienvironmentisonethathasbeendesigned tobeinteresting, • engaging, and supportive of the child’s development.
