  2. Among the many types of waste that we generate every day, E-Waste is an important type. As a result of rapid industrialization and mechanization we have invented many electronic devices like phones, pagers, computers, cameras, photo copier, electric bulbs, tube lights, wires etc. when these electronic devices become obsolete or useless they become e-waste. This waste is very difficult to process and can be hazardous as well. Thus proper system and process is required to deal with it. All the secondary computers, mobile phones, television sets, refrigerators, etc that have been discarded fall into the category of Electronic Waste.

Scenario • Manufacturing of electrical and electronic equipment is the fastest growing sector • Every house having electronic equipment • More than 40-50 million tons e-waste world / year • Asia estimate of 15 million tons / Year • Average content metal of 60%, including copper and gold • 50-80% e waste collected in US and other developed countries exported to third world countries • E-waste is still the fastest growing municipal waste

  6. 2005-2.6 m tons in India of which 12.6 recycled • 22 to 24 million computers and televisions are added to storage each year • 400 m units to be scrapped by end of decade • 8% of municipal waste in EU and 2-5% in US • 1-22 kg per person/p.agrowing at 3 times faster than the municipal waste • Recycling is the only way to treat e-waste

Indians upgrade or exchange their Mobile Phone every 18 months, meaning there are approximately 12 million unused mobile phone stashed away at home or in the office • Average working life of a mobile phone is 6 years but worldwide the average consumer changes their mobile every 7 months • Indian purchased 40 million mobile phones in past years including 9.28 million in 2007

  8. Design for Recycling It will result in better environmental performance and lower costs of treatment It does not stand alone: • Advanced technology • Availability of industrial infrastructure • Outlets for secondary materials • Appropriate organization of take back systems
