The Critical Nature OF Ear Protection For American Hunters A large percentage of Americans engage in some type of gun activity. The National Rifle Association, which is a gun rights advocacy group that is based in the US, has on average 5.5 million members. Although many of these shooters will merely engage in recreational shooting such as target practice or letting off steam at the gun range, many Americans enjoy the thrill of hunting season and use their firearms to hunt game on an annual basis. There are a few differences between those who use their own or others’ firearms at the range, and those that engage in hunting alone. At the gun range, it is required by law for any patron to wear certain types of personal protective equipment (PPE), which usually includes ear and eye protection. Special glasses are used to protect your eyes from unpredictable cartridge trajectories, bugs and dust, and anything else that may interfere with your vision while shooting. Ordinarily, a gun range will offer earmuffs as ear protection and this is to protect your hearing from the gunfire. The inside of your ear is covered in very tiny hairs that pick up vibrations from the environment and translates it into interpretable noises for your brain. These hairs are easily damaged by loud noises, and once damaged, they do not grow back or recover which results in permanent hearing loss. Although it is unlikely that you will go deaf from a single day at the range, your hearing may be notably and irrevocably impaired if you do not wear the regulatory protection. The difference between hunting and shooting at the range is that hunters tend to engage in their shooting activities alone and out in the field. This means that there is no governing body or range master to tell them to wear the required PPE. Additionally, many hunters may believe that because they are out in the open, the gunfire will be distributed and won’t affect their hearing as much. This is simply not true. Any hunter will hold their firearm close to their head in order to be able to see their target and accurately fire their shot. This means that when the gun fires, it will be in very close proximity to their ears, and the fragile hairs that can be so easily damaged. Any hunter should invest in top-quality ear protection should they wish to protect their hearing in the long-term. Although earmuffs are the most widely-used ear protection when shooting, this is often not ideal for hunters that like to get up close and personal with their firearm. The earmuffs may get in the way of their sight, and they may feel as if the earmuffs are too hot or cumbersome to wear all day. Additionally, earmuffs usually block out all sound, which means that they won’t be able to hear subtle sounds created by game moving about the brush, a trap opening, or their spotter signaling to them. The best type of ear protection for a hunter that wants to protect their hearing is a small and unobtrusive earplug that has been custom designed for their ears. This last part is very important as hunters tend to spend entire days, if not weeks, on their hunt, and the ear protection should be comfortable enough to wear for long hours at a time.
Earplugs that have been custom designed to fit snugly and perfectly inside the ear will allow the hunter to wear them for days on end. Additionally, earplugs should also be engineered in such a way that the hunter can toggle them in order to let certain ambient noises through. This type of control over the noise level allowed through the earplug will enable the hunter to hear traps opening, the soft padding of game in the field, and perhaps their friends or family members that are accompanying them on the hunt.
