Look After Your Hearing Acquire Protective Ear Devices The ability to hear, just like the ability to see and enjoy all of our other senses, remains one of the most important gifts that nature can ever bestow on us. Without hearing – even when limited hearing is present – our quality of life is compromised. Of course, as we grow older, we may start to hear less well, but for younger people it can be really frightening and upsetting if this happens. Think, therefore, about the effect that unnaturally loud sounds and noise may have on our ability to hear – or to hear well. All over the world tests have been, and are, conducted to study the adverse effects of noise on people’s hearing. Decibel (dB) is the logarithmic unit used to measure sound levels, in other words how soft or how loud. It is fact that the louder the sound, the more potentially harmful it is, i.e. the higher the dB the more serious the possibility that one could suffer damage to the ears, to the ability to hear. It is said that very high levels of around 140 dB, such as those emitted from jet engines and similar noises, may lead to permanent hearing loss, certainly after repeated exposure and possibly after one exposure to such force of sound. Many experts believe that even lower levels than 140 can cause harm – even at around 120 dB. Be it as it may, few will disagree that the louder the sound, the more pressure on the ears and the greater the chance that one could lose one’s hearing, or suffer from hearing loss. The acronym NIHL is known to many and is associated with – normally – the condition referred to as “noise-induced hearing loss”, which is a result of continued exposure to sound pressure, and then specifically higher than normal dB. As people age, many things change in the body, also the ability to hear like a teenager, but NIHL is different: it is caused by constant, or ongoing, or repeated exposure to harsh and unnatural sound. This is certainly experienced by shooters and hunters and their instructors too, as they are constantly exposed to sudden, very loud sounds. These sounds can certainly cause permanent or partial damage to individuals’ hearing, in either one or both of their ears as the sounds interfere with and cause damage to cells, membranes and those nerves that have to perform well to enable proper hearing. Therefore all hunters and shooters, shooting instructors, soldiers and other military personnel, certain factory workers and employees at plants where noise is heard all the time should always consider the advice of doctors, specialists and also professionals that work in an industry that produces hearing protection for the mentioned individuals and groups. Unlike a few decades ago, there now are great options available for these people to help them protect their hearing when they take to the field when deer hunting season arrives, or the time that competition shooting commences – or when they know they work in a factory where these high dB levels are the order of the day.
Some of these refer to the different types of ear plugs on the market, many of which can be bought in a shop – over the counter. They are pushed into the ear while shooting to help block out the harsh noise when shots are fired or noisy machines operated. Some others are more advanced than these basic plugs and offer better protection, such as ear muffs that can be worn – or the most recent, most technologically advanced digital devices that are custom-made for a specific individual’s ears and worn inside the ear to eliminate harmful sound but to still let through normal sound at acceptable such as sounds from nature or someone having a conversation with someone else. Of course a lot depends on how much the individual is prepared to spend, since the last category will not be the cheapest, but for most the best, and only, option.
