History of Belguam Fort

The fort got its name from the belgaum city. Belgaum is a beautiful city in Karnataka, the word Belgaum as originated from two words (Bel) (Gram), the word Bel means bullock and Gram means Village. Earlier in the ancient time Belgaum was a grassland, it was the hub of good quality bulls, people from all over India use to come to trade bulls.<br>

  3. The fort got its name from the belgaum city. Belgaum is a beautiful city in Karnataka, the word Belgaum as originated from two words (Bel) (Gram), the word Bel means bullock and Gram means Village. Earlier in the ancient time Belgaum was a grassland, it was the hub of good quality bulls, people from all over India use to come to trade bulls. • Historically, Belgaum fort has been always, a disputed fort because of Its strategic importance. The fort is in the middle of the Belgaum city, in Belgaum in the state of Karnataka. The city is known as the second capital of Karnataka and also Switzerland of India, because of its beauty.

  4. The Belgaum fort was built in 1204 Ad by the officer called Bichi Raja of Ratta Dynasty. The city round the fort remained as the capital between 1210AD and 1250AD. Later the Yadava dynasty of Devgiri won the fort and controlled it for a brief time. • In the 14 century the Khaljis of Delhi captured the fort. In 1437 under the leadership of Mahmood Gawa, the Bahmani sultanate defeated Khaljis and captured the fort. Later the Bahmani split into 5 small states and belgaum fort got into the hands of Adil Shah. Ismail Adilshah began the rule.

  5. In the 1686 the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, defeated the Bijapur sultanate and took control over it, however, Aurangzeb rule short lived. Death of Aurangzeb weakened the Mughals and hence it was won by Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1776. Later the Peshwas took the control of Maratha empire and defeated Hyderali. Later with the help of Shivlinga Raju the fort was captured by the British by defeating Peshwas.

  6. Religious place in Fort • Jain temple • There are two jain temples in (Kamal Basadi) and (ChikkiBasadi). Pf these two temples the Kamal Basadi is more famous, it is a Basadi with Neminath idol in black stone. • The second temple ChikkiBasadi, in ruin now, once was called as ‘remarkable piece of jain temple’

  7. Hindu Temple • There are two main temples in the Belgaum fort, one is of lord Ganesh and another is of Goddess Durga. Goddess Durga is in multiarmed posture. She is considered as the goddess of the Belgaum fort.

  8. Mosque • There are two Masjids in the fort the Jamia masjid and safa Masjid. Safa masjid was built by Asad Khan Lari in 1595. The pillars of the masjids are from Hindu temple and they are of 1199Ad, archaeologist says, it was earlier Hindu temples • If you ever visit to belgaum do not forget to visit this awesome fort.
