  1. IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME Irritable Bowel Syndrome (I B S), now-a-days referred to as I B D (Inflammatory Bowel Disorder), is part of a larger group of disorders called F B D (Functional Bowel Disorders), Many doctors in West Bengal are wrongly treating the patients with a host of drugs (most of them either useless or harmful). And since their mediocre knowledge does not enable them to distinguish between I B S and Lactose Intolerance, they randomly restrict milk intake in patients, thus ensuring that patients depend on progressively greater doses of medicines in a vicious cycle. First, I B S or I B D has no permanent cure. Any drug for symptomatic / palliative relief must, therefore, be restricted to the minimal. Lifestyle is a better method of dealing with this malady. I myself suffer from I B S. My doctor, a retired head of the medicine department of the Railways, has offered me excellent counseling ─ and I am very well (except for slight exacerbation once a while ─ but even that is never debilitating or serious enough to hinder my normal duties). Milk is the only known safeguard against gastritis, gastric ulcer and I B S. But milk consumption must be followed by a sufficient gap (not less than 45 minutes; the longer the better). Only in case of Lactose Intolerance Patients should all dairy products be restricted. However permitting one dairy product and restricting another is irrational and unscientific. I take only milk as my breakfast in the morning. Thereafter, my work schedule is irregular. I myself do not know when I will have the next meal. But I am always perfectly hale, hearty, active and energetic. I have conquered I B S! So if a doctor advices an IBS patient to avoid / restrict milk, it is not because milk is contraindicated in IBS / IBD, because he does not possess the expertise to distinguish IBS from Lactose Intolerance.
