Task 1 How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues.
What genre of film have you made an opening title sequence for, give examples of key iconography of this genre • My opening title sequence is a crime/thriller/gangster film. • Some examples of key iconography for this genre would be • lowkey dark lighting • eerie music • the use of weapons • Costume
What films are you comparing it to? • Goodfellas (1990) • The Godfather (1972) • Scarface (1983) • John Wick (2014)
Comparison of characters • Goodfellas has one main character with a few supporting characters • The Godfather has around 4 main characters with one which is slightly more sufficient than the rest • Scarface has one main character with 5 supporting characters • John Wick only has one main character which is very distinct • In my opening title sequence there are three main characters
Comparison of the narrative • Goodfellas life of a boy who becomes a gangster and performs a heist • The Godfather consists of the life of a mafia family • Scarface follows the story of a drug lord • John Wick shows a man who has been hurt on the hunt for revenge • My opening title sequence consists of men disposing of a body
Comparison of tone/atmosphere/intended audience response • John Wick: • Emotional • Independent • VengefulMy opening title sequence; • Thought out - Slow - Serious - Violent • Goodfellas: • Old • Shady • Hidden • Drama • The Godfather: • Aggressive • Professional • Classic • Scarface: • Humorous • Casual • Illegal
Titles – Font, Colour, animation • The font we used was to make a more intense sense. • The colour was chosen as there is a dark background to make the titles stand out. • The animation of the titles is fading in and out
Order of the titles • The transition from the last of action to the title of the film. This is typical to do in crime movies. Shows the sense of what the movie is about.
Challenging conventions • We did not challenge many conventions • Steve Neale - repetition, tired and tested formula • Knowing what sells • Has an existing audience
What groups/issues are presented in our opening title sequence • The status in our opening title sequence are the victim and the ‘gangsters’. • How easy it is for businessmen to do a dirty deal and get involved with the wrong people • Crime and how it is an issue for the evolving world
Theories • Levi Strauss – Binary opposition • Steve Neale – repetition + differences
Stereotypes in my opening title sequence • Gender • Two men • Strong • Victim is also a man
