Enigma Codes Enigma Codes are elements that the audience doesn’t understand or doesn’t know the answer to YET. Questions that are raised by the media product that are not answered yet. An example of this is when the killer in a horror film is not revealed in the opening sequence.
Enigma • 5 different codes • Hermeneutic code – Unexplained ellements • Proairetic code – a nod to future events • Semantic code – more than one meaning • Symbolic code – deeper societal meaning • Cultural code – cliches
HURTWOOD THRILLER What enigma codes were raised in this?
DISCUSS • Why do film openings need enigma codes?
ENIGMA CODES • Enigma codes are useful tools to engage an audience and keep them watching. They want to see if the rest of the film ‘answers’ the questions raised. • Too many enigma codes might confuse an audience, particularly if they don’t ever get answered.
Action Codes • Action codes are any element in a film which suggests something specific will happen later. Eg if we see someone locking a door and checking it…..
It might foreshadow that later on in the movie, someone or something is going to get through that door.
I AM LEGEND • Watch the opening sequence to the film I Am Legend Make a note of any enigma or action codes that you think you can see in the sequence
