Ureterocele Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment

A ureterocele is a condition that involves swelling of the terminal end of ureter. Ureter joins the kidney with the bladder. It is formed as aresult of obstruction at the junction of ureter and bladder. The condition can be detected during pregnanacy on antenatal scan. Also it can present with symptoms of urinary tract infection and urinary incontinence.

Ureterocele:Symptoms,Causes,Diagnosis andTreatment |Dr.PrashantJain Ureterocele Introduction Aureteroceleisa conditionthatinvolvesswellingoftheterminalendof ureter.Ureterjoinsthekidneywiththebladder.Itisformedasaresultof obstructionatthejunctionofureterandbladder.Theconditioncanbe detectedduringpregnanacyonantenatalscan.Alsoitcanpresentwith symptoms ofurinarytractinfection andurinaryincontinence. Ureterocele Theconditioncanbeunilateralorbilateralandsometimesmaybeassociated withduplexsystemi.e.onekidneyissuppliedwithtwo ureters.Thecondion asaresultofobstructioncancausehydronephrosiswithbackpressure changesinkidney.Sometimesitcanassociatedwithvesicouretericreflux. SymptomsOfUreterocele Yourchildmayexperiencethefollowingsymptomsduetoureterocele: • Abdominalpain • Urinarytractinfection

Frequenturination • Painfulurination • Burningsensation duringurination • Fever • UrinaryIncontinenece • CausesOf Ureterocele Theexactreasonforthisconditionisnotknown.Theconditionmaybe due to aprobleminthedevelopmentoftheurinarysystemduringfetal development. RiskFactors ForUreterocele TheexactcauseofUreteroceleremainsunknown.However,certainfactors increasetheriskofdevelopingthiscondition.Thesefactorsinclude: • Gender: Girlsareatmoreriskascomparedto boys. • Race:Thiscondition ismorecommoninwhitesascomparedtoothers • DiagnosisOf Ureterocele Yourdoctormaydiagnoseureterocelethroughthefollowingmethods:

Prenatalscan: Thedoctormaydiagnosethisconditionbeforethebirth ofthechild.Duringtheevaluationforthepresenceofhydronephrosis, thedoctormaydiagnoseureterocelethroughprenatalultrasound. • Renalbladderultrasound:Ureterocelenormallycausesurinarytract infection.Oncethedoctordiagnosesurinarytractinfectioninyourchild, hemayadviseyouforvariousimagingtests.Renalbladderultrasound mayhelpindiagnosingureterocele. • MRI:MRIhelpsinperformingthecomprehensiveevaluationofthe completeurinarysystem,includingthekidneys,ureter,andbladder.The high-quality, detailedimagesthroughMRIhelpsindiagnosingureterocele. • MAGIIIRenalscan:Thedoctorperformsthistesttodeterminethe functional statusofthekidneyandto knowtheobstructivedrainage. • Voidingcystourethrogram:Duringthisprocedure,thedoctorfillsthe bladderwitha solutionwiththehelpofa urethralcatheter.Thedoctor takestheimagesofthebladderwiththehelpofaninstrumentto determinethepresenceofureterocele.Thedoctoralsoanalysesifthe solutionisgoingbacktothekidney(vesicouretericreflux). • TreatmentFor Ureterocele Thedoctorcustomizesthetreatmentfor ureteroceledependinguponvarious factors.Thesefactorsincludetheseverityofthecondition,presenceof vesicoureteralreflux,sizeofureterocele,effectonkidneyfunction,andifthe ureteroceleextendsintothebladder.Followingaresomeoftheoptionsfor treatingureterocele: Conservative Management:Thisisadvicedincaseswhoareaymptomatic withoutanybackpressurechangesinkidney.Restofthecasesmightrequire someformofintervention.

Ifthedoctordiagnosestheconditionatanearlystage,eventheureterocele ofhighseveritymaybeeffectivelymanaged.Mostchildrenachievenormal urinaryfunctionafterureteroceletreatment. ComplicationsOfUreterocele Followingaresomeofthecomplicationsofureterocele: Hydronephrosis:Theurineflowsback,resultinginswellingofkidneysdue to ureterocele.

  5. Vesicoureteralreflux:Theurineflowsbackintothekidneys,thereby increasingtheriskofkidneyinfection andkidneydamage. Kidneystones:Ureterocelemayalsoincreasetheriskofdevelopingkidney stones.
