  1. Postpartum Care for the Health of Mother and Baby Postpartum care is important for both the mother and child. The postpartum period is considered to last for roughly six weeks after birth. As part of postpartum care in Vancouver, midwives will make home visits during this time to monitor the health of mother and child. Postpartum care can also include help with nursing; there are nursing specialists and lactation consultants available in British Columbia as well for anyone who is having problems connected to breastfeeding their infant. Postpartum care in Vancouver is both physical and mental. Giving birth is a huge strain on the body, and the body needs time to heal afterward. Rest is needed, especially during the first few days and weeks post birth. Depending on how delivery went, a mother may have stitches or other surgical procedures done during birth that may require follow-up appointments. It is also important to make an appointment with your pediatrician as soon as possible after birth. While midwives stay on for postpartum care Vancouver, they are not doctors, and will not continue to provide care after the postpartum period. It is normal to feel exhausted and be sore, however always pay attention to symptoms and go to the doctor or the emergency room if you are experiencing anything abnormal. Postpartum care Vancouver is done by a variety of medical professionals, not just midwives. However, your midwife is there to talk to and to answer any questions, concerns, and to provide information. If necessary, midwives may tell you to seek medical treatment, if you are experiencing symptoms or conditions that go beyond what they can safely treat at home or in their offices.

  2. Mental health also needs to be considered when looking at postpartum care in Vancouver. Postpartum depression is a form of depression that happens after birth. Experiencing mood disturbances after birth is common and in most cases nothing to worry about. However, debilitating, extreme bouts of depression can happen post birth. Postpartum depression is not the mother’s fault, nor should she be treated as a bad mother. Many women start experiencing postpartum depression symptoms during pregnancy, so it is a good idea to monitor mental health throughout your pregnancy. Postpartum care in Vancouver needs to be holistic in order to provide mother and baby with the best possible care. If you are experiencing any health issues after birth, talk to your midwife about next steps and solutions.
