  2. INTRODUCTION Tonsillectomy = surgical removal of the palatine tonsils One of the most common ENT surgeries Performed mainly in children but also in adults

  3. ANATOMY & FUNCTION OF TONSILS Part of Waldeyer’s ring Immune tissue located at the back of the throat Role in immunity during early childhood

  4. INDICATIONS FOR TONSILLECTOMY Recurrent tonsillitis (≥7 episodes in 1 year, ≥5 episodes/year for 2 years, ≥3 episodes/year for 3 years) Obstructive sleep apnea (enlarged tonsils) Peritonsillar abscess (recurrent) Chronic tonsillitis with halitosis Suspicion of malignancy

  5. PREOPERATIVE ASSESSMENT Detailed history & examination Blood investigations (CBC, coagulation profile) Anesthesia fitness assessment Counseling patient/parents about risks & benefits

  6. SURGICAL TECHNIQUES Cold steel dissection (traditional) Electrocautery Coblation tonsillectomy Microdebrider-assisted Harmonic scalpel

  7. INTRAOPERATIVE CONSIDERATIONS General anesthesia Positioning Hemostasis Avoiding injury to adjacent structures

  8. POSTOPERATIVE CARE Pain management Hydration & soft diet Monitoring for bleeding Antibiotics if needed

  9. COMPLICATIONS Primary hemorrhage (within 24 hours) Secondary hemorrhage (5–10 days) Pain & odynophagia Dehydration Infection

  10. OUTCOMES & RECOVERY Most patients recover within 7–10 days Significant reduction in throat infections Improved breathing & sleep quality
