He seemed to have a happy and stable life until things started to go wrong.

  4. Early Warning Signs: Varvera’s Disturbing Transformation According to his relatives and acquaintances, Varvera began to change in the early 2020s, becoming more withdrawn, paranoid, and aggressive. He started to abuse alcohol and drugs, particularly methamphetamine, sourced from a local dealer. Concurrently, he developed a fascination with guns and explosives, amassing a substantial arsenal of weapons and ammunition in his basement. Varvera became obsessed with conspiracy theories, believing that the government, the media, and the police were all corrupt and out to get him. He often ranted about his views on social media, alienating many of his friends and family members. He also became abusive towards his wife and children, who eventually left him in 2022 and filed for divorce. Afterward, his ex-wife sued him for refusing to pay child support or alimony. He also lost his job, his house, and his reputation. He became isolated and bitter, blaming everyone else for his problems. Varvera’s downward spiral reached its climax on August 24, 2023, when he decided to take his anger and frustration out on the world.

  5. The Shooting Incident and the Manhunt On August 24, 2023, around 6:45 p.m., Thomas Varvera Jr. was involved in a violent confrontation with the police at his home on Creech School Road in Troy, Missouri. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call and found Varvera outside the house. The police surrounded the area and launched a massive manhunt, involving helicopters, dogs, and SWAT teams. They warned the residents to stay indoors and lock their doors, as Varvera was considered armed and dangerous.
