About Cichlid Fish

Many aquarists and even novice aquarists who haven't had much experience are able to spot generic species of cichlid fish (pronounced "sicklids") within their dealer's aquariums. 1. About Cichlid Fish Many aquarists and even novice aquarists who haven't had much experience are able to spot generic species of cichlid fish (pronounced "sicklids") within their dealer's aquariums. They sport a certain "look" that they have with regard to shape and behavior. This is due to the fact that all cichlids share a range of anatomical and behavioral characteristics which have put them in the family of Cichlidae belonging to the family Perciformes that is, also known as "perchlike" perch-like fish. They are, for starters, all freshwater fish, however, they can be quite adept at brackish waters and have close saltwater fish cousins particularly the damselfishes and surfpersches and wrasses, that together with cichlids make up their own suborder Percoidei. Cichlid fish also share a variety of particularities in their anatomy, with some discernible, while others are not. They have a variety of obscure particularizations that are part of their digestive systems as well as of the inner ear, which aquarists aren't able to discern, and a major feature that isn't apparent to the uninitiated, that has allowed them to be extremely successful in utilizing various freshwater ecosystems. The pharyngeal jaw. It is an anatomical distinction shared with others of the Percoidei. Then how do we as aquarists identify cichlid fish? Their position within the order Perciformes implies they are "perchlike" with respect to general appearance. Think of bass or sunfish (neither of which are Cichlids) in terms of shape and appearance. They can also be simple to recognize by their behavior. Cichlid fish of all species are parents which means that they take care of their eggs and their young and young, which makes them stand out from the vast majority of fish. The specifics of this behavior are different between species. Some species have pair-bonding substrate-spawners and some have mouthbrooders. There are, however, other behavior patterns associated with reproductionterritoriality, courtship -which are unique to "cichlid." Gill flaring

In addition, cichlids are adept and sensitive to their surroundings in the aquarium, unlike minnows or tetras. In the end, the intricate behavior of cichlids is among the main reasons to keep their aquariums in your home. Click to know more about fish species, visit our website Creature Companion.
