Like many fresh graduates, I thought sending out as many applications as possible would guarantee me a job. I didn’t realize then that there are 5 mistakes to avoid when applying for jobs that many of us unknowingly make. These mistakes can silently block you from getting hired, even if you have the skills and passion. Looking back, I remember feeling confused and frustrated when I kept getting no replies or rejections. Over time, I learned that employers pay close attention to details, and missing those details can hurt your chances. This article is a personal reflection on what I went through in those early months, what I wish I knew, and practical tips you can use to avoid the same pitfalls. Sending the Same Resume Everywhere At the start, I was guilty of using one resume for every job application. I thought it would save me time and effort. But what I didn’t realize was that this is one of the most common job application errors to avoid. Employers want to see that you took time to understand their specific needs. When you send a generic resume, it looks like you’re not fully invested. It’s better to tailor your resume to highlight the skills and experiences that match the job description. Not researching the company was one of the ways I missed out on interviews or struggled when I got them. Spending time to visit the company’s website, check their social media, and learn about their culture helped me prepare better. It also gave me confidence during interviews because I could connect my answers to what the company values.
