  1. Using Laser to Reduce the Appearance and Effects of Hyperpigmentation We have all been subjected to the horror stories of what can happen to your skin should you be negligent in the sun. Although sunlight is healthy for us and offers much-needed Vitamin D, which is generally good for us and our skin, too much of a good thing in this case is truly a bad thing. Too much sun exposure can cause untold damage to your skin, leaving tell-tale marks in the form of sunspots, thread veins, lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. It can also dry out your skin, change its underlying structure and, at its worst, even lead to various forms of skin cancers. Sunspots, or hyperpigmentation, are caused by direct, prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays or from artificial sources of UV rays, such as sunbeds. This is why it is important to be very careful when tanning, whether that be in the tanning bed or outside on the patio next to the pool. Intense and prolonged UV exposure causes the melanocytes, which are the pigment cells that make melanin to give your skin its colour, to produce excess pigment in just one spot instead of across the whole skin’s surface, creating darker brown patches. In the case of sunspots, it isn’t that the number of melanocyte cells increases, just the amount of pigment they produce. However, even though excessive sun exposure is one of the leading causes of hyperpigmentation, a person’s lifecycle, or ordinary ageing process, as well as a host of completely normal hormonal changes can affect the even distribution of melanin in your skin. This means that you may start to see darker or patchy areas on your face or a mere discolouration which can be attributed to either age spots or sunspots. Many renowned and esteemed aesthetic clinics will use different types of laser treatments depending on the type of pigmentation the patient is experiencing. Treatments will also vary depending on the area that is being treated, the type of pigmentation, and the level of recovery time. Laser treatment is one of the most advanced and innovative ways of removing unwanted hyperpigmentation on the skin, which can include age spots, sun spots, and freckles. For patients suffering from hyperpigmentation, the laser is one of the top treatments advised as it penetrates deeper into the skin than other methods and will therefore offer better and longer-lasting results. Laser treatments for sunspots are widely viewed to be safe and effective, especially when performed by a suitably experienced laser aesthetics practitioner. Some people find that their skin feels hot for approximately 15 minutes or so after treatment, and your skin may look red and flushed for about an hour. Laser treatments are safe for all skin types and all ages, and can therefore help anyone to look and feel their best as they rejuvenate their skin and reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Depending on the severity of the hyperpigmentation case in question, treatments can yield visible results in as little as one to three treatments. It is always a good idea to visit the clinic you’re intending on using for a

  2. full consultation ahead of your treatment. This allows the aestheticians to evaluate the level of hyperpigmentation and the best treatment method. During a consultation, professional and experienced aestheticians will also be able to tell you how many sessions you can expect to undergo before you’re likely to see results. This gives you a clear idea of what to expect and you’ll feel more comfortable as you start your treatment.
