Mixed Waste Recycling: Sorting the Unsortable? Mixed waste recycling, often referred to as single-stream recycling, involves collecting a variety of recyclable materials – paper, plastic, metal, and glass – in a single bin. This approach prioritizes convenience, encouraging higher participation rates. However, it also presents challenges. The collected mixed waste is transported to a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) where it undergoes a complex sorting process. Machines like magnets, optical sorters, and air classifiers separate the different materials. This process can be less efficient than source-separated recycling, leading to higher contamination rates and potentially lower-quality recycled materials. While mixed waste recycling diverts significant amounts of waste from landfills, it's essential to understand that contamination, such as food scraps or non-recyclable items, can hinder the process and reduce the overall effectiveness.
