1. Sleep Study Machine at Home: Setup, Use, and Results What is Home Sleep Study /Home Sleep Test? This is a diagnostic procedure which is carried out at home of the patient while He/she sleeps. Since this is done to check sleep patterns and it is done home that’s how it is known as Home Sleep Test/Home Sleep Study. Why a Dr suggest a Home Sleep Study/ Sleep Test in India? A doctor can suggest a Home Sleep Study/Test to diagnose any Sleep Disorder. Most common sleep disorder is OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) so in majority of cases Dr can suggest Home Sleep Sudy/Test to diagnose OSA. What are different machines available for Home Sleep Study / Sleep Test in India? Mainly there are 4 types of options available for home sleep study /home sleep test in India. Your Dr can suggest for any of them based on his clinical requirements. Different types are – Level 2 Polysomnography /Type 2 Polysomnography: This is done for a detailed analysis of sleep patterns. Polysomnography test can help to know the apneas at different stages of sleep, its impact on heart functioning, drop in oxygen levels in different stages of sleep . Level 3 Sleep Study/Sleep Test: This is a basic test which helps to identify the average apneas during sleep and an average drop in oxygen saturation. This cannot provide detailed data like sleep stages, heart activity etc . This is also done to diagnose OSA in high probability cases. Level 4 Sleep Study: This is a screening tool and generally this is not being used in India for diagnosis. This also provides average apneas during sleep but it has limited data available. Wearables (PAT Devices) : This is a new and evolving technology which works on different algorithm. This also helps to diagnose OSA. Details of data may depend upon the device which is being used. Please check with your Dr if he accepts the sleep study with wearable device. What is the setup procedure of Home Sleep Study Devices in India ? Different type of devices may have different setup process for home sleep study /sleep test – Level 2 Polysomnography /Type 2 Polysomnography : For this type of Sleep Study Test a sleep technician visits the patient’s place and hooks up the device. Technician’s stay is required with patient in most of the cases as there are some channels which are connected at different parts of body so if patient moves for washroom etc then channels may be disturbed. For split night polysomnography technician helps to put titration machine after midnight. After completion of test technician removes the machine and instruct patient for any clean up. When the diagnostic device go back to service provider’s office then all the data gets downloaded and report in generated after complete analysis. Level 3 Sleep Study /Sleep Test : For this type of device technician stay is not required. Technician will hook up the device and go back. In the morning patient can return back the device. When device reaches to service provider’s office then data gets downloaded and report is generated . Level 4 Sleep Study /Wearable devices : These are comparatively basic and easy devices to use . Someone can instruct the patient and patient can do it himself. No technician stay required.
